Mercerization of Tencel fabrics using different alkali hydroxides (such as NaOH, KOH and LiOH) under constant tension had been studied. The influences of concentration of alkali agents, treating temperature and duration on mercerization were investigated. The barium activity number (abbr. BAN values) and colour ability (K/S values) of Tencel fabrics had the tendency to increase with the concentration of alkali solutions increased. In addition, the treating temperature and duration had no significant effect on the experimental results. The effectiveness of alkali hydroxides for BAN value is in the order as follows: KOH>NaOH>LiOH, and the colourabilities (K/S values) in the order, KOH>NaOH>LiOH.
