In this study, PAN-based carbon fiber was selected to undertaking bulk modification through ultralow temperature also called cryogenic treatment. The interfacial properties of un-treated and cryo-treated carbon fiber were studied in a comparative manner. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of modified carbon fibers with epoxy resin was characterized by means of the micro-bond test and the result showed an increase of 29.5%. The atomic force microscope (AFM) showed rougher surface after cryogenic treatment which in agreement with the result of IFSS. The structure of carbon fiber was characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), which indicated some physical changes in fiber structure.
