Beauty is usually found in the form of art works. Meanwhile, it can also be practiced in daily life. A best proverb that describes this concept goes as follows: “art is life, and life is art.” In Chinese classical canon Yizhuan 易傳, the concept of Ying 陰 and Yang 陽 is regarded as a law of nature that originates from natural phenomenon. It is applied to interpret opposite forces that are interconnected in human life, including the rise and fall of dynasties, change of society as well as ups and downs of life. This study mainly focuses on the idea of “contrast” found in Yizhuan’s description over how opposite things always come in pairs and eventually beget each other. The project attempts to embody this Chinese philosophical idea in the form of Western modern art, and produces a series of art works named “the Series of Contrast”. Although the series put emphasis on visual expression of “contrast” and thus they are visual works presented in pure art form, the motifs of them are firmly funded in our daily life. They are inspired by both Chinese and European ideas and are natured not only by traditional Chinese culture, but also by the latest trend of Western modern art. Both abstract painting style and minimalmalism are adopted as the may of visual expression.
The purpose of this study is to fully interpret all the phenomenal things in the universe with the idea of “contrast”
