It is characterized as a transition period that portrays conflicts between the conventional class system and the increasing change were brought with capitalism and its growing market in eighteenth-century England. In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the author dramatically exposes the pedagogic factor of parenting and the unjust and inefficient factors of patriarchal tradition in British upper class. Through the process of self-awareness, people develop a better understanding of individual self and others psychologically. This thesis is to show how men and women learn to understand each other in order to build sincere relationships, develop healthy and stable marriages, further homes and whole society.
In terms of discussing the protagonist’s process of self- awareness in Austen’s Pride and prejudice, I especially want to focus on how the protagonist, Elizabeth changes her thinking and emotions from her prejudice on Darcy. When Elizabeth first meets Darcy, she has strong prejudice and misunderstands Darcy’s real mind and love. Actually, to form a prejudice doesn’t take much time, but casting away the prejudice is not so easy and takes longer. However, Elizabeth, through the process of conflict and confusion between her prejudice and real information, she realizes self-awareness and gradually casts away prejudice. She understands Darcy and thanks him.
Further, this thesis shows that the characters influence Elizabeth’s process of self-awareness. The protagonist, Elizabeth, in her process of self-awareness, is influenced by many people; friends, family members, relatives and her partner, Darcy and so on. Everybody is influencing each other. No one can live alone. Influence is not just positive but sometimes negative. However, sometimes even negative influence is helpful. Everybody goes through a process of self- awareness. Through this thesis, the reader can see how Elizabeth overcomes prejudice, realizes self-awareness, and repairs her relationship with Darcy. |
