This thesis, on the repertoire for the light lyric soprano, is based primarily on the selected works of famous arias by Handel, Pergolesi, Paisiello, Mozart and Verdi in chronological order. By offering the background information and a brief description of each composition, the readers will first obtain a basic understanding of the plot synopsis of each opera and the role the singer would play in the particular situation. The author then selects certain repertoire suitable especially for light lyric sopranos and translates the lyrics into Chinese so that the singers will not only perform these works musically, but will be able to express the emotions and thoughts accurately according to the plots. This section is then followed by the author's personal interpretation of the repertoire, informed by the thoughtful guidance from the author's voice teacher, Mrs. Lo. Included are also the author's personal thoughts and approach to interpretation during the process of learning these arias. Numerous revisions have been made to try to present this thesis in the best possible way. It is my sincere hope that my fellow light lyric sopranos will find this thesis a helpful reference in their preparation for performance of these works.
