This study mainly explores the use of tongue twisters in the teaching of Chinese pronunciations. This study aims to 1. probe the pronunciation errors of Indonesian learners of Chinese in initials and tones; 2. develop tongue twisters for the design of teaching materials on pronunciation; and 3. evaluate the learning effect of tongue twister pronunciation materials. Based on literature review, comparative questionnaire and quasi-experimental methods, the study targeted 10 Indonesian learners of Chinese by giving them pre-test, 10 weeks of tongue twister training at 90 minutes each week and final test. The study used the SPSS 18.0 for statistical analysis. Following an analysis of related literature, it was found that Indonesian learners typically made mistakes in the pronunciation of blade-alveolar initials, dorsal-palatal initials, blade-palatal initials. Therefore the researcher selected: ㄗ﹝ts﹞z、ㄘ﹝tsʰ﹞c、ㄙ﹝s﹞s、ㄐ﹝tɕ﹞j、ㄑ﹝tɕʰ﹞q、ㄒ﹝ɕ﹞x、ㄓ﹝tʂ﹞zh、ㄔ﹝tʂʰ﹞ch、ㄕ﹝ʂ﹞sh、ㄖ﹝ʐ﹞r 10 initials in the design of main teaching materials. For the study, we proceeded to teach 2 initials each week, including: 1. introduce the place and manner of articulation; 2. circle test after listening; 3. tongue twister practice; and 4. games to enhance the sound recognition and pronunciation ability of Indonesian learners. After 10 weeks of fun, targeted and practical tongue twister teaching, the experimental results showed that tongue twister practice will help improve the pronunciation of learners along with significant improvement in learner's tone. This study suggests that tongue twisters should be used in teaching activities or teaching materials. Through practicing tongue twisters, it helps correct pronunciation errors of learners of Chinese effectively.
