This thesis will present the musical analyses and the performance interpretations of Ernest Bloch’s “Suite Hébraïque for Viola and Piano” and “Meditation and Processional for viola and Piano”, which are in Jewish style. He applied particular rhythms and Jewish style of music in his works. These elements made his music dramatic and full of high tension that impressed people a lot.
This thesis includes four chapters. First of all, the introduction is given in chapter one, including the motivation and purpose of this research. Secondly, Ernest Bloch’s “Suite Hébraïque for Viola and Piano” is illustrated in chapter two which provides the background information of the work on the first section and follows up with the interpretations and analyses on the second section. Next, Bloch’s “Meditation and Processional for Viola and Piano” is discussed in chapter three, which contains the background information of the work on the first section and the interpretations and analyses on the second section as well. At last, the reflection of the performance is provided in chapter four.
