Taiwan is advancing into an aged society. According to estimation, by the year 2025, the population of old people will surpass 20% of the total population thus causing Taiwan to become an aged society.
With regards to the problem of long term care, one of the key problems for care is that carers of Taiwan nationality were lacking. Consequently, there is an over reliance on imported foreign labor. However, the lack of language training of foreign nurses causes barriers to care in not being able to perform their duties in clinical situations. Such lack of language training would ultimately endanger the life and health of elderly patients. Furthermore, when foreign carers first arrive in Taiwan, conflicts and social problems would arise from having to meet the challenges of living in a foreign country and culture such as Taiwan and homesickness. In view of this, this research hopes to design and develop Mandarin Chinese language teaching material for such specialized nurses in order to offer some solutions to the problems mentioned above. Research objectives of this research are (1)to investigate the needs of foreign nurses in terms of learning Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan; (2) to outline principles underlying the writing and design of the training nurses Chinese material; (3) through a content analysis approach to summarize the aims of a syllabus which aims at the specialist training of Chinese language of foreign nurses; (4) lastly a sample chapter is presented as an illustration of a sample chapter from such teaching material.
The principles of writing Mandarin teaching materials on long term care put forward by the author are: (1) to acknowledge the experience and specialized knowledge and techniques of foreign nurses; (2) to pay attention to the culture differences that exist between foreign nurses’ native cultures and the Chinese culture. (3) As much as possible, the teaching material should demonstrate how a compassionate, mutually caring, possible thinking teaching material can be conceived and executed. (4) Teaching material should also be designed to take into account of localized language and language use. (5) Topics chosen for the material should closely follow and reflect the content and nature of the work that foreign nurses do so as to strengthen the relevance of the material and increase the overall benefit to this area of study.
