It is a global phenomenon that the population is becoming aging in contemporary society. In Taiwan, the structure of population has transformed aging as well.Families and relatives are the core informal supporting system for elders; however, according to the related studies, friends are also important and significant resources and support in one's later life.Based on social convoy theory and socioemotional selectivity theory, the purposes of this study were: (1) to understand the current status of the elders' personal background, friendship support, and well-being; (2) to examine the difference of personal background on friendship support of the elderly; (3) to examine the difference of personal background on well-being of the elderly; (4) to investigate the relationships between friendship support and well-being of the elderly. A total of 330 elders were surveyed from elderly service centers in Taipei, and 299 (91%) valid questionnaires were received.Three instruments were used including “Friendship Support Scale”, “Well-being Scale” and “Personal background Questionnaire”.Data were analyzed by frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe method, and Pearson product-moment correlation. The results showed that elders' friendship differed as function of gender, marital status, number of friends, and frequency if interaction with friends. The elders' well-being differed as a function of marital status, educational level, number of friends, frequency of interaction with friends, perceived financial situation, number of illness, and perceived health condition. There was a medium significant and positive relation between friendship support and well-being of elders. Based on the findings, recommendations for the elderly, elderly service centers, and related institutions were provided.
