Five bamboo species were selected as experimental materials and evaluated the technological utilization valueby means of some factors including internode length, culm dia meter, culm wall thickness, the distribution of fiber content, and mechanical strength. ResuIts are summerized as foIlows: National Chiayi Institute of Agriculture. 1. The variation of internode length shows the smallest value at the base of culm and then increases to the certain level of height. After this, internode length decreases with the height of culm to the top. Significant curve correlation exists between internode length and internode number above ground. 2. Culm diameter and culm wall thickness decrease linearly with the height. Using culm factors of internode length, culm diameter and culm wall thickness to evaluate synthetically the culm forms of five bamboo species, the culm form in sequence is BS > PP > PB > BD > DL. 3. The even distribution of fiber content which plays an important role of technological utilization was used to evaluate the quality of bamboo culm. The result is BS > PP > DL > BS > PB. 4. No significant relationship between specific gravity and fiber content for five bamboo species that reveals clear difference among fiber properties of different bamboo species. The relationship between mechanical strength and fiber content shows low consistency.
