This qualitative research interprets the life of the pet owners who lacked of attentions and care in childhood and experienced a sudden unexpected death of their companion animals. By the method of the hermeneutic phenomenology, this study goes deep into the life of the interviewees, discovering the profound meanings of the nature of their life.
Through the non-structural in-depth interviews, this study collects eight texts from four participants, who have experienced the sudden death of their companion animals. With the method of the hermeneutic phenomenology, three topics are generated from the study: (a) The feeling of affinity at first sight brings the owners and the companion animals together, and their relationship establishes through daily interactions, (b) the sudden death is too painful to bare and thus causes the animal owners to have negative emotions, (c) the mourning rituals and others’ company help owners ease their grief from the loss of the relationship. To elaborate these three subjects, the “projection of needs and desires” represents the relationships between owners and their companion animals. The “Inner World disintegrates quickly” represents the state that the owners who experienced the sudden death of their companion animals.
Furthermore, in this research the psychological process is analyzed and explained with a simple diagram. Based on the discussions of the three topics, the study generates seven points: (a) there are three main topics of pet owners experiencing the sudden death of their companion animals, (b) the disintegration of “Inner World” of the pet owners happens when they experience the sudden death of their companion animals, (c) emotional expressions differ from different causes of their companion animals’ sudden death, (d) mourning rituals can help ease their grieve, (e) the mental support from companion animals can be an obstacle in interpersonal relations, (f) the death of companion animals and keeping excessive pets is another re-traumatization and emotion deprival, (g) it is easier for pet owners, who have emotional attachments and interaction experience with animals, to get in counseling systems. Finally, I believe the research can offer useful suggestions to pet adoption agencies, pet owners who lose companion animals, and their relatives and friends, veterinarians, staff working in funeral business, counselors, and related future researches.
