In Taiwan, the government usually plays a leading role in the preservation of historical cultural site. In addition, the designation and identification of historical site call for the input of a large abundant of social resources. However, the resources input by the relevant government departments are not enough to support the preservation and maintenance of so many historical cultural sites. After the comparison of the characteristics of non-profit organization and profit organization, it’s found that the involvement of non-profit organization in the management and operation is more beneficial for the sustainable development of historical cultural site. In New Taipei City, in order to achieve the sustainable development of Li Family Compound, Historical Site Maintenance Foundation for Li Family Compound is set to manage, operate, and preserve the historical site. The operation fund of the foundation comes from the transfer of the development right of the historical site. Additionally, the revitalization of historical site and the experiencing activities of Chinese traditional folk culture can generate the income for the foundation. Thus, the sustainable development of Li Family Compound can be promoted.
After study, it’s found that the sustainable operation concept and policy implemented during the operation and management of Li Family Compound worth approving. In addition, the development strategy of managing the preservation of historical site through the foundation is worthy of imitation. The organization operating private ancient house can draw lessons from the mode to reach sustainable development by obtaining revenue and tax break from the transfer of development right and the organization of folk culture activities.
