The study applies space syntax analysis that reveiws the urban development of Taipei city and investigate the planning, expansion, and transition of Taipei city's urban space from 1904 to 2011.
The relationship between urban space and space formation can be understood by analyzing the transition of urban space in each time period. Space syntax is a measurement based on road network to analyze space.
To examine the factors that influence urban development, previous road network of Tapiei city has been analyzed by space syntax. Then, measured factors from different time periods is put into calculation for understanding the characteristics and the expansion of outer space of the city, as well as the evolution of the inner space structure .
This research will examine eight historical periods of Taipei city: early years of Japanese rule (1904), mid years (1921), late time (1945), the retricession period of Taiwan (1957), economic arising (1965 and 1979), and modern Taipei (2000 and 2011).
The progress of road network and the evolution of Taipei city through times were informed via Space syntax; by 1904, due to the highest score on global interation, Taipei city had expanded from its single-core center slowly towarsds outer regions.
The east village (located around Zhongshan N. Rd. and Zhongxiao W. Rd.) of Taipei city was the key area of city development during the period of 1921. The road network had expanded eastwards in sector-shape, then turning to concentric circle shape in 1945. Since then, Taipei city has evolved in the shape of both sector and concentric circle.
The road network of Taipei city was first time appeared in 1957 by extending routes to different areas. During 1965, people from Taiwan's mid-south area moved into the city then the east village of the city had developed community settlements, causing global integration moving gradually to the east region of Taipei city.
The structure of road network of Tapei city has become well-formed and dense by 1979 improved by urban planning division and urban land consolidation. By 2011, the overall Taipei city's route network has been done quite completely. According to collected data, the development of Taipei city has been saturated. Unless the government or the urban plans that engage land consolidations, otherwise Taipei city's road network is generally setteled.
