The effects of cadmium (Cd) on seed germination and seedling growth of two rice (Oryza sativea L.) cultivars Taichung 10 and Tainung 67 was investigated. Taichung 10 can tolerate a much higher concentration of cadmium than Tainung 67 in the case of seed germination and plumule growth, but the reverse was fure for root elongation. At the concentration of 2000ppm the germination of both cultivar of seeds were strongly inhibited. As for the root growth and plumule growth inhibition occurred at 200 ppm of Cd. Whereas seedling growth were strongly inhibited at a much lower concentration of 20 ppm. Preliminary analysis of Cd content in seeding indicated that after 24 hours treatment, seedlings of both cultivars accumulated several fold of Cd to that of the culture medium.
