Abstract: Tatun Shan is an isolated mountain system. It is located in the northern end of Taiwan. Physical factors controlling its climatic condition are monsoons, typhoons and topography.
During the prevailing months of winter monsoon, the wind is strong and the temperature is low. The sky is generally gloomy with occasional rain. Typhoon usually invades Taiwan in summer and autumn. They took about 27% of the frequency of those tropical storms occurred in the South Pacific. Topographically, the frequency of rainy weather in winter generally decreases from northeastern side to the southeastern side, and vice versa in summer.
According to different altitudes, windward and leeward directions and the rainfall patterns, the climate-of Tatun Shan may be classified into five categories. They are Central Region Gcfa, Northeastern Region Cfa, Northwesterh Region Cfa, Southwestern Region Cfa and the Southern Region Cfa.
The influence of the winter monsoon climate should be considered as a main factor in our development of agriculture, forestry, pasture and tourism in Tatun Shan.
