    Abstract: In the Central Highlands of Vietnam, the Rong House has been known as a special architectural symbol which symbolizes not only socially as community center of the ethnic minorities, but also spiritually as a religious pivot of people. Because of modern industrialization and urbanization, many Rong Houses, nowadays, have not been built by following the traditional way, but in new types with modern architecture features or modern materials such as metal, concrete, cement, etc. As such, the modern Rong Houses lost their ethnic socio-cultural identity. Among them, the Rong House of the Bahnar ethnic group is one of few building in Vietnam which still keeps the original features and traditional meaning until now, and still possesses the distinctive characteristics in every aspect of its architectural design, including that of site planning, spatial organization, building form, interior decoration, structural system, and building material, etc. This research shall focus on the socio-cultural significance of the Rong House of the Bahnar ethnic group.
    Most of Bahnar Rong Houses were built in Kontum province of Central of Vietnam. As far as the religious function is concerned, the Bahnar Rong House is considered as an intermediate space where the Bahnar people meet their God. Among the modern life, this House, with an artistic combination of sculpture, painting, and decoration, etc., has possessed a special architectural feature, which embodies with the soul of people of Central Vietnam, and reminds people about the beauty of jungle living. The research shall be proceeding by the methods of the historical literature review, the field study, and the questionnaires, etc. The main body of the study shall include that of the social and cultural life of the Bahnar ethnic group, the characteristics of the Rong House, the socio-cultural significance of the Rong House.
    This research involves the study of the traditional architecture in a specific region of Vietnam, and provides information about the relationship between architecture and the living of ethnic group. The result will help Vietnamese to preserve their traditional architecture as well as to make suggestions for the future architectural development and design in the Central Highlands.
