The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of body mass index, dietary and exercise habit as well as understand the relationships among these variables during first year in freshmen in Taipei area. A total of 422 freshmen, 198 male students and 224 female students recruited and screened, also completed twice of measurement including weight, height and questionnaires. As a result, compared with the time of first month in university, body weight, body mass index and body fat percentage of all students were significantly increased at 8 months after entrance of university (p <0.05). The frequency of vegetables and whole grains daily intake were reduced, while high-fat-content food as well as alcohols intake were elevated. The number of late-night snack was increased per week. The growth and decline of off-campus non-buffet and on-campus buffet were respectively observed. Regardless of schools and genders, the times per week of on-campus buffet negatively correlated with the increment of body weight (p <0.05). This result showed that non-variety dietary behavior might cause weight gain in freshmen. Only 30% of freshman maintained regular exercise habit. It would be expected that healthy food and sport environments created by universities in order to supply various foods and sport events for students.
