本文主要探討湯婷婷的成名作《女戰士》之中國傳統女性在早期社會地位上的形象, 以及在受封建制度下典型的傳統柔弱無知的婦女,於這種物品化、壓迫的處境,決定了女性主體意識的覺悟。經由作者湯婷婷母親的口說故事的方式,如何影響著在雙重文化成長下的華裔美國人湯婷婷。本論文分成三章,探討文中《無名女子》及《西宮》,並藉由巴赫汀的詮釋檢視中國傳統文化的邊緣,及作為生活在美國白人中心社會的邊緣尋找自我的一個過程。作者認為,唯有藉著敘事的力量打破緘默,大聲訴說,才有獲得性別平等的希望。在無名姑姑及月蘭的故事下成長, 湯婷婷體會到,欲塑造她的屬性,就必須尋求自己的聲音。
This thesis mainly examines the traditional Chinese women in early society who are typically weak, ignorant and live under feudalism in Maxine Hong Kingston’s best seller, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. Under the situation of materialized oppressions, the society determines women’s subjective awareness. The Woman Warrior is somehow deeply influenced by Kingston’s mother’s talk-stories. This thesis is divided into three parts, discussing “No Name Woman” and “At The Western Palace” based on Bakhtin’s point of view to explore the Chinese American women in their efforts to break silence and seek identity in the society in which they have been marginalized. The author believes that breaking silence and finding one’s own voice is the only way to establish one’s subjectivity. Thus, as a little girl, Kingston feels haunted by no name aunt and influenced by Moon Orchid as a growing up Chinese-American. Given such conflicting messages, she realizes the necessity of seeking identity.
