This paper examines the nationalist discourses of the newspapers' reports and comments on games and achievements of Taiwan's little league baseball sport in the late 1960s while the Team Hongyie defeated Japanese All-star Team and the Team Jinlong won the champion title of the 23rd Little League Baseball World Series. Then, it explains how the logical relation between those baseball games and the development of the nationalist consciousness and national imaginations was initially constructed. There are two major conclusions. The first, at the beginning of Taiwan's little league baseball fervor there were lots of the nationalist discourses infiltrated into the relative reports and comments of newspapers. Within those discourses, only one imagined subject, Chinese, was found. The second, the arguments of those discourses are not theoretically built on a new perception of the nationalist problems. Instead, they represented the same recognitions and contexts, which originated during the process of Chinese modernization, of the body culture and just reproduced when a new social condition happened. |
