The purpose of this study explores the effects of education, age, and college major upon the youth unemployment in Taiwan.
For the empirical study, we use the 2007-2013 Man Power Utilization Survey from the Directorate-General of Budget. Using the Logistic regression analysis, when omitting the variable of age, the empirical result shows that when omitting the variable of age, schooling reveals a significantly positive effect on the unemployment rate. However, after including age as an additional explanatory variable, age has replaced schooling as the most important factor in determining the unemployment rate, especially for the aged 15-24 of youth group. Our empirical study also finds that the unemployment rates among different college majors are significantly different. For example, the medicine, police and education related college majors have lower unemployment rates than the engineering major. Other majors like liberal art, business, management and communication have higher unemployment rates.
