This study proposes a theoretical framework to practice terrain assessment in the northern Coastal Range of Eastern Taiwan, based upon 40 m by 40 m digital elevation model. Parameters being concerned in the terrain classification include gradient, roughness, local relief, and the divisions of orders for each parameter are realized from the analysis of histogram (frequency and magnitude distribution) of each parameter themselves, upon which the index of landscape sensitivity and its spatial distribution are established. The elevation is analyzed and classified independently, and it is synthesized from the natural breaks of the histogram of magnitude and frequency of elevation and the literature of the distribution of vegetation. A supervised land cover classification is practiced for Feng Bin basin by Geoeye-1 satellite image, and the land cover is divided into four types – vegetation cover, water surface, settlement, and shadow. The classification and zoning of the landscape sensitivity index are overlaid with geological map, elevation zoning, and land cover map, and their relationship are discussed. The result shows that the correlations between three parameters being used in the landscape sensitivity index are high. The zoning of the landscape sensitivity coincides well with the geological map. It is also matched well with the distribution of land cover, elevation distribution and settlement distribution. This thesis proposes a preliminary index of the landscape sensitivity, and it is in future combined with the cost-benefit analysis for land development and land use to serve as the basis of tarrain evaluation for the sustainable development. |
