摘要: According to Edelman Trust Barometer, Indonesian people trust media more than the government. The media that Indonesian people use is divided into mass media and social media. Mass media used to be the main medium for citizens to obtain information about their government. However in recent years, social media has become another significant source for citizens to obtain information. Scholars in public management and political science have done numerous studies focusing on trust in government in many aspects. However, there were only few studies from journalism and communication scholars about the use of media and its effect on citizens’ trust in government.
The purpose of this research is to further the discussion of the use of social media and mass media in restoring citizens’ trust in their government. The study focuses on trust in the DKI Jakarta local government among university students in DKI Jakarta. This is a quantitative research with survey method. Questionnaires were distributed to 496 respondents.
The results of this study shows that gender does not have significant relations with use of social media, use of mass media and trust in government. While the academic majors do have partial relationship with use of social media, use of mass media and trust in government. The findings also shows that there is positive and significant relationship between both use of social media and trust in government, and use of mass media and trust in government.
