In this paper, the novel of "The Grieved Reflection of A Xiao in Autumn" by Eileen Chang will be discussed and analyzed by the theory of five codes identified by Roland Barthes. It will be mainly divided into two parts: first with the introduction to Barthes’ ideas of five codes and then with the application of the theory to analyze the work of "The Grieved Reflection of A Xiao in Autumn". Regarding to this novel, there are around 13630 words so that, in the processes of analysis, 92 reading units are designed in which there are 24 "keys" being developed. It aims to explore the deeper and broader meaning of the work by the use of Roland Barthes’ theory and it is hoped that it will create a better method to approach Eileen Chang’s great work.
