Abstract: The purpose of present study is to investigate the effect of different dietary dehydrated sorghum distillery residue (SDR) levels on erythrocyte profiles, crown and feather in Taiwan black feather native chickens. Two hundreds and eighty eight 5-weeks-old Taiwan black-color native chickens (144 male and 144 female) with similar body weight were divided into 4 groups. Twelve birds of each gender were kept in one floor pen with 3 replicates in each group and fed with isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets containing 0, 10, 20 and 30% SDR for 12 weeks. The diets used at 5-8 wks of age, 9-12 wks of age and 13-16 wks of age were mash feed with CP(%)/ME(kcal/kg) as 21/3100, 21/3100 and 19/3100, respectively. Feed and water were supplied ad libutum. The results showed that 12-wks-old bird fed with 20%SDR diet have higher erythrocyte number (P<0.05), and 16-wks-old male and female birds fed with 20% and 30% SDR, have higher erythrocyte number (P<0.05). There are no significant differences in hemoglobin concentration among treatments; nevertheless, there are significant differences in packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin of birds among treatments during growing or finishing period. Based on erythrocyte profiles, crown and feather appearance of birds, Taiwan black-color native chicken fed with different SDR levels with isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets were beneficial to health during growing and finishing period.
