The aim of this study was to improve a ballet dancer’s performance in Grand Rond de Jambe en Láir through “core strength training”. It was hypothesized that with “core strength training”, dancers could execute adagio exercises such as Grand Rond de Jambe en Lair more precisely. Such training would enhance the hip rotation, increase lateral rotation, and hip abduction, which makes perfect the Grand Rond de Jambe en Láir from the beginning to the end.
Twenty undergraduate dance major students were chosen to participate in this study: ten of them were in an experimental group who received intervention, and the others were in a control group who received no training. There were three methods used in this study: 1.) use Motion Capture (100 Hz) developed by Motion Analysis Corporation to collect and analyze kinematic data, 2.) use handheld muscle strength measurement to measure hip lateral rotation and abduction strength, 3.) use handheld goniometer to measure hip external rotation in static. The intervention of this core strength training also used elastic exercise bands, a core stability ball, as well as a sand bag to increase the degree of turnout within the pelvis area. Each session was one and a half hours weekly for a total of eight weeks. There were a series of training to assist dancers with improving their ability performing adagio exercises.
The data from each training session and testers’ basic information was entered in SPSS statistical software. These were shown in the average (mean) and standard deviation (SD). The analysis depended on: 1.) whether training was received and 2.) the data collected before and after training. The results of the statistical significance level, after considering the differences between groups and before and after the intervention, was set at alpha = .05.
In conclusion, this study proved the following:
1.) Through the core strength training, the ballet dancers had improved their ability in performing Grand Rond de Jambe en Láir as well as adagio exercises;
2.) Through the core strength training, the ballet dancers had enhanced their external hip rotation;
3.) Through the core strength training, the dancers had increased the degree of lateral rotation;
4.) Through the core strength training, the dancers had gained control of hip abduction.
The research showed that the eight-week core strength training intervention had improved the dancers’ stability and control of their body, and such intervention could be applied in training a dancer’s core muscle group. This study not only provided supplementary training methods to dance teachers, but also refined dancer’s Adagio movements and performance more precisely and quickly after receiving the core strength training. |
