The aspect of Taiwan prison literature is totally different from the basic idea of “abandon minister” in the “Devaluation Literature” of Chinese classic literature. Matter of fact, the prisoner writing spirit of Taiwan literature reflects the interactive affection of the environment of the times, the authors themselves, and the atmosphere of the literature creation. Therefore, there are three aspects in Taiwan prison literature worth to discuss. The first is the environment of the times. The second is the places of the literature being created. The third is the connection between the authors and their writngs. Ever since the Ming and Ching dynasty, Taiwan has been, regionally and politically, placed in a ridiculous position, the absurdity of time and space. This absurdity will be reflected by the humanity of the specific time and space. The aspects of humanity in the writings will be discussed in this thesis.
This thesis includes preliminaries, appendix, conclusion and two chapters. The first chapter outlines Taiwan political rough time and the building history of jails in Taiwan. The second chapter discusses the writing aspect of Taiwan prison literature. The authors and their writings can be divided into three sections, sixteen chapters in total.
Section 1 discusses the prisoner writings of Japanese occupied period from 1889.
Section 2 includes six chapters. Time spans from 1949 to 1978. The authors which will be discussed by chapters are
In section 3, time spans from 1979 to 2005, the authors which will be discussed by chapters are 姚嘉文、呂秀蓮、紀萬生、楊青矗、王拓、施明德、溫瑞安、林建隆、許仁圖、composition class in prison、the lyric of singer 郭桂彬 etc.
This thesis will be ended by listing all the study achievements. The oral history and the reasons why they were in prison of 3 contemporary prisoner writers, 姚嘉文、柏楊、楊青矗, will be also cited in the Appendix.
