Abstract: Located in the west coast of Taiwan, Yunlin County is considered as one of the most industrialized counties in the country. Therefore the impact on the county’s coastal zone is significantly high. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of coastal land use changes in Yunlin County between 1996 and 2011 on shoreline dynamics. Two sets of satellite images were used as major data sources, 1996 SPOT and 2011 FORMOSAT-2, and all analysis were performed using GIS techniques. Land use classification included seven types of land use classes and their area changes between the two years and correlations between each land use area change with shoreline area changes were calculated. As results revealed, between 1996 and 2011, the Yunlin coastal zone had experienced significant land use changes, in which, large increase of industrial area and residential area along with substantial loss of sandy coasts were more obvious. During the last sixteen years, Yunlin shoreline had changed its position with both erosion and accretion, however accretion was more prominent and common in many places. Therefore, the net shoreline change observed was an accretion with 1.65 km2 area. Results further revealed that, area changes of agriculture land, residential land, abandoned land and aquaculture land had influenced to shift the shoreline further inland, causing a negative impact, whereas, area changes of industrial land and sandy coast had a positive influence (shifting shoreline towards sea). However, the positive impact was mainly due to land reclamation projects and damage of natural coasts, therefore, this was not favorable for natural coastal environment. Further, it was found when land use changes in study area were occurred within the areas of 3×5 to 5×5 km2, they had a significant impact on Yunlin shoreline. This study indicated that, human-made coastal land use changes occurred in Yunlin between 1996 and 2011 had long-term influence on shoreline position changes. These changes had significantly impacted on its coastal environment.
