This study aimed to explore the trend of feminist creation by the female artists in the twentieth century. Therefore, this article attempts to use qualitative research methods to explore their feminism perspectives and horizons. The study focused on three Chinese and Western feminist artists and their achievements, as well as literature and graphical creations. The historical status and social value of feminine creations and vitality are explored under the impact of Eastern and Western patriarchal society and feminist trend.
The feminists strived for “gender equality” in the past, and have now been replaced by “mutual respect”, in order to create a win-win value. The early artistic development is limited and constrained by family, economic, educational and social background, and many other factors. However, several female artists emerged in the twentieth century, revealing the artistic talents of women. These female artists freed themselves from the limitation of the external factors, by having their own space for creativity and independent thinking. Through their introspective dialogue and shaping their own aesthetic model, diverse creativity are made possible to modern feminist arts.
Direction of this research is centered in the meaning and rise of the twentieth century feminism. The feminist thought in the paintings of American painter Georgia Totto O’Keeffe, Taiwanese painter Chen Jeang and Mainland Chinese Pan Yi Lang are showed as the vertices of this study. The social identities of these three artists are explored from the perspective of their life history, artistic development and the creative atmosphere of the era. In addition, feminist thoughts and trend in their paintings are interpreted along with their self-positioning, and artistic value in the twentieth century. |
