: The purposes of this study are to investigate Taipei junior high school students’ attitudes toward “extramarital relationships” and “divorce” and analyze different effects of the variables of individual and family backgrounds on their attitudes toward “extramarital relationships” and “divorce” and related situations.
The survey method is adopted to collect data and Stratified Random Sampling is used to draw junior high school students in Taipei City as the research subjects. The study selects 682 students as the research samples, and a total of 678 valid questionnaires are collected, with an effective response rate of 99.41%. The measurement tools for questionnaire include “Personal Background Questionnaire” (PBQ), “Attitude toward Extramarital Relationships Scale” (AERS) and “Attitude toward Divorce Scale” (ADS). The data collected are analyzed by statistical package for social science (SPSS) for Windows 18.0, including statistical methods like descriptive statistics, one-sample t test, independent samples t test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffé's method, Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple regression. The research results are as follows:
1.Taipei junior high school students’ attitudes toward extramarital
relationships and divorce are both conservative, regarding divorce and extramarital affairs as unacceptable.
2.The students who are in Grade 9, have love experience more than three times, feel more pressure about the economy and do not know whether their parents have extramarital affairs, as well as their parents keep a bad marital relationship are more likely to accept extramarital affairs.
3.The students who are female, in Grade 8 & 9, whose parents got divorced and who do not know whether their parents have extramarital affairs, as well as their parents have a bad marital relationship or have extramarital affairs are more likely to accept divorce.
It is hoped that the research helps junior high school students cultivate a proper idea of family ethics and enlighten them to work hard for the happiness of their future marriage life. It also provides references on gender equality and the design of teaching materials on premarital education for parents, schools and institutions promoting family education.
