| 摘要: | 本文主要的研究目的，乃是企圖透過對於隋末唐初之際，割據江南地區群雄政權的興衰起伏，對於時政局所產生之影響。
學界過往對於隋末唐初之際的研究，似有偏重華北中原地區之傾向，對於南方的割據勢力向來欠缺深入研究與探討。本文認為，在楊隋政權既衰，群雄並起，逐鹿天下之際，最後雖然是由代表北朝「關隴集團」勢力的李唐政權一統天下；然而，江南地區尤其荊、揚二州的割據勢力，在隋末大亂之初，未始不能將鼎祚輕移，而南方勢力終至失敗的歷史因素何在？華北中原勢力終能取勝的原因又何在？是為本文意圖探討與提供解答的歷史問題。
本文初步認為，隋末唐初之際，南方的兵馬並不會比北方來得衰弱，最主要的原因在於南方的資源比北方少了許多，李唐因為佔據了許多大型官倉，因此在其平定南方的軍事資本上有著雄厚的實力；而唐高祖佔有長安之舉也是上上策，因為當時天下的政治號令中心仍在長安－－此所以先奪得長安和關中地區以及此地官倉的李唐王朝，最終成為了天下的主宰者。
不過，值得注意的是，代表北方勢力的李唐政權徹底打敗南方力量，成為天下共主後，整個李唐王朝的政治體制，卻在中晚唐時代逐漸呈現「南朝化」的趨勢，這雖然是漸形漸著而成，卻也顯示出南朝體制仍有其不可忽視的一面。
