The use of internet and an ageing population are two global trends. While the handwriting input method has become one of the options with the rise of tablet computers, the main input method for the computers in public places is still the Bopomofo method. However, the computer training programs for elderly generally do not incorporate Bopomofo input method in their courses, even though knowing this method is the key to access and search for the information on the web. Bopomofo, for both native and non-native speakers of Chinese, is an abstract symbol system. A total of 12 elder native speakers of Chinese, who originally took a “Learning Bopomofo through picture books” organized by the Taipei Public Library, participated in this study, which was based on the ADDIE approach and the frameworks for teaching Bopomofo and computer training. We first conducted an 8-week pilot study. We then used questionnaires, interviews, and a Bopomofo proficiency test to analyze learners’ needs, and developed an appropriate Bopomofo course to teach this group of learners how to read, spell, and use Bopomofo as an input method for typing Chinese characters. The reserach results indicated that this course not only significantly increased the learners proficiency in reading, spelling, and using Bopomofo as an input method for typing Chinese characters , but also enhanced their self-confidence for acquring other knowledge , including a foreign language. We hope that the results of this study provide useful references for future related research and teaching application, as well as for the attention and concerns the elderly deserves for their continuing intellectual development. |
