The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, first published in 1925, presented the prosperous American society after the First World War and the social climbers’ status-seeking process by purchasing luxurious goods. Wealth becomes a general sign of status in societal network; namely, money may earn admiration and respect by ostentatious consumption. However, the protagonist Jay Gatsby, a bootlegger who finds his fame through holding lavish parties at his own mansion in New York, encompasses enough power either to establish a great fortune or pursue the love of his life. Crowned by the newly gained wealth, he still cannot share the same public esteem as the “Old Money”. Using Thorstein Veblen’s observations on the leisure class in The Theory of the Leisure Class and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of taste and social distinctions in Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste, this thesis aims to discuss class, taste and consumption of goods in the novel, and to read social mobility through the characters’ shopping behaviors.
