In 1997, the Vietnamese government approved internet access for its people, and this action has affected people’s lives in profound ways, especially the lives of its adolescent population. Various studies focus on the effects of Internet use on the physical and psychological health of adolescents, and how it affects their academic performance. In my research, however, I will concentrate on the effects of Internet usage by adolescents on family relationships. I will discuss adolescent motivation for Internet use, the types of internet use they engage in, and the amount of time they spend using the internet. I will also discuss aspects of family relationships that affected by internet usage such as pluralistic, protective, consensual and laissez-fair. I believe this study will help readers understand the effects of Internet usage on family relationships in Vietnam.
