Abstract: Gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) solid electrolytes with small additions (0.25 wt.%) of SiOX as sintering aids were prepared by the sol-gel method. Material characteristics of the prepared and calcined electrolyte samples were identified by X-ray diffraction for crystalline structures and scanning electron microscopy for surface morphology and microstructures. Based on materials characteristics, the preparation route of adding SiOX as sintering aid in GDC electrolytes lowers the sintering temperature of the densification process for the application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Adding SiOX also increases the relative density of the bulk electrolyte and the total conductivity. Materials produced in this way could be recommended as solid electrolyte layers for SOFCs systems as compared to the well-known yttria-stabilized zirconia.
