The current status and analysis of college
student’s participation of service study ─
the case of the Oriental Institute of Technology

Abstract
This study explores the service-learning experiences of college students in terms of volunteer services. The main purposes of the study are as follows:
1.To understand the motivations of student volunteers who participate in service learning.
2.To examine the contents of what student volunteers learn and experience in the midst of participating service learning.
3.To discuss how participation of service study has influenced student volunteers.
4.To explore difficulties and obstacles encountered while student volunteers participating in service learning and how they tackle these problems.
5.To formulate suggestions in light of the conclusions made by this study and to provide advices to relevant organizations as a reference for designing service-learning programs.
After the consents of teachers and students from the Oriental Institute of Technology who actually practiced the service-learning curriculums were acquired, in-depth interviews and participant observation were carried out to gather data needed for this research. The following conclusions are made based on the analysis of qualitative data from interviews and participant observation.
1.The motivation of college student volunteers in participating the service study is multiple, including altruistic, self-benefiting, sociological, and situational motivations.
2.The reason of college student volunteers who are able to persist in participating the service is mainly due to the influences from volunteers themselves, organizations and other important people.
3.Student volunteers engaging in volunteer service must possess necessary knowledge, competence, and positive attitude that mainly focusing on direct service.
4.The learning scheme of college student volunteers is diversified. The majority of learning occurs occasionally and during the service situation.
5.College student volunteers participating in the service study can generate positive influences on students’ academic knowledge, individual growth, social responsibility and civil consciousness.
6.The obstacles of performing service study rarely come from family, school and organization. Nevertheless,it has found that personal difficulties are multi-dimensional.
7.Most obstacles and difficulties encountered by college student volunteers can be solved properly. The spirit of the team cadre in tackling problems is worth to learn.
