“Bamboo Flute Concerto” was composed by renowned Taiwanese composer Ma Shui-Long in 1981. Written for a solo bamboo flute and western style orchestra, the composition opened the new era of blending the East and the West in Taiwan. Moreover, thank to Taiwanese bamboo flutist Chen Chung-Sheng’s perfect premiere, the work was performed on stages around the world.
The dissertation studies “Bamboo Flute Concerto” by reviewing the literatures of the composer’s biography, academic background and the cultural value of the music. Also, a thoroughly investigation of the work helped in collecting the data for the music performance analysis. Through applying the theories in performance, the research could be a reference for bamboo flutists practically in the future.
