Wang Ching-ping, a contemporary pipa performer and composer, contributes himself to music and spares no efforts to promote the art of pipa. Being bold in trying and probing into the performing forms, techniques and composing idea, Wang brings new concept into the development of pipa art, and further broadens the horizons to compositions of pipa.
The research aims at Wang’s two modern pipa compositions: an early work The Rime of Pipa and a later one The Song of the Crescent Fountain. The analyses of two works consist of respectively four parts: composing background, musical analysis, performing interpretation and new devised techniques; the author tries to interpret properly the spirit and the composer’s idea with a throughout comprehension on Wang’s composing concepts and musical thought.
