This thesis seeks to explore the theme of death presented through female images as displayed in the four authors of the nineteenth century. In particular, the relationship between death and woman in this period is examined. This work is divided into four parts, to cover each of the four writers: an American novelist, a French poet and two British poets in the Victorian period. It addresses four authors of three different nationalities, in different social contexts, and with different poetic styles. Rather than stick to a single author, this parallel examination allows us to broaden the research perspective. Despite the similarity of theme, that of death, each author retains his own style, and his sensitivity toward it.

The common theme of death in these authors is more or less romantic, symbolic. They share an interest in the death of woman that is in part of fantasy and aesthetic. We find in these writers certain perversities that push them further to death, as if there were a life instinct closely linked to the death drive. In the works studied, we observe the metamorphosis of the corpse in the writings of Poe, Baudelaire’s description of carrion, the portrait of the deceased in Browning, and the victim of love and art in Tennyson’s work. On one hand, there are homicidal lovers, artists eager to magnify woman into words, and to sublimate death. On the other hand, these are self-tormenting artists who grasp the woman as death, and represent her death as eternity, spirituality. We discover in these authors, among the male characters of these authors, voyeurism, fetishism, sadism-masochism, as well as necrophilia. The authors maintain a gloomy, grim, cadaverous atmosphere. It is this fantastic climate that crystallizes the charm of these works and subtlely attracts the readers.

The four writers or poets set off in a game of seduction and attraction by staging the crimes of love, perverse beings and mysterious creatures. They also share a commitment to play rhetorical games. This thesis will identify the various expressions by which each of the authors express an aesthetic of death that encompasses both the sordid and the sublime. From work to work, writer to writer, throughout this paper, we undertake a series of exegeses that explore the richness of the imaginary worlds of these artists, and excavate a complex consistency therein.
