There has been a trend of fantasy novel in Taiwan in the 21st century. Because of the cinematizing of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, people in Taiwan started to appreciate the genre that had been prevailing in the Western countries. Many Young writers also started to compose fantasy works. Nowadays, the fantasy novel has become a significant genre of popular literature and occupied an important part of literary market. However, do the people in Taiwan truly understand the essence of fantasy literature? What are the origin and the development of fantasy literature? And what could be identified as the path in which Taiwan readers and writers receive fantasy literature?

This research investigates the development of fantasy literature in Taiwan and Western world, its interactions with cinema and computer games, its origin in England, and the effects of its introduction to China. The different situations that modern fantasy novel faces in Taiwan and the Western world, the interpretations of modern works that include the writers’ attempt to transcend the limit of genre and to combine different fictional styles, the reflection on the possible reconciliation of popular and classic literatures, and reinforcing the importance and necessity of fantasy literature to Taiwan publishing market are also the major points of my research.
