Title: Implementing the Toastmaster Tradition in the University Language Classroom Setting
    Authors: Freda Chiang

Abstract: This article proposes that by implementing the format of the typical Toastmasters Meeting in the language classroom setting, instructors can provide their students an opportunity to converse comfortably in English without having to leave the safety of the campus. The typical Toastmasters Meeting consists of participants telling jokes, making impromptu speeches, delivering prepared speeches, running the meeting, introducing people, and evaluating various participants' performance. This kind of event is an opportunity for participants to learn through participation, resulting in the enhancement of English skills, especially listening and speaking. The author carried out an experiment in which she implemented a Toastmaster Meeting in her College English classes at National Yang-Ming University in November-December, 2000. The results of this experiment suggest not only the ability to implement such an agenda successfully in the classroom, but also demonstrate that students enjoy this format and feel it is highly beneficial to their English language skills.
