    Abstract: 『英語實習』課程之教師須面臨選擇教材的難題,而浩瀚無涯之教材令人無所是從。本文作者經果過一番調查之後,以為美國的『有線電視新聞網』最符合注意力較短暫的學生之教學。本文首先探討語言學習—尤其是聽力—之一般性原理,其次說明資料之搜集,接著討論所搜集材料之教學過程,最後以作者之觀察作結論。

    The language teacher in a language laboratory course confronts the problem of which material he/she should use. The plethora of materials is staggering. After surveying many items, I decided that in the television age, with the short attention span of students, the Cable News Network (CNN) is a valuable method of teaching English in the classroom. This paper discusses a general theory of language learning, emphasizing listening comprehension. This is followed by an explanation of how these materials were obtained, and a discusson on how these materials were used to improve listening skills and expand student vocabularies.
