This paper explores how EFL students improve their listening comprehension through an understanding and use of the 10 essential characteristics of spoken English: rhythm, reduction, assimilation, deletion, coalescence liaison, abbreviation, pronunciation, accent and Intonation. Pro-activity and post-activity exams were administered to investigate improvements in listening comprehension following exercises such as teacher Instruction and guided practice. The analysis of these exam results points to positive improvements in student listening ability, and provides a basis for recommendations on improved instruction.
