Traditional puppet play is one of the most valuable culture assets of Taiwan. In the early agriculture society, it plays roles of social education and mental purification through entertainment it provided. However, while the society shifted to industrial, traditional puppet play is on the wane day after day. Many precious scripts, skills and the performance records gradually vanished. Therefore, the project intends to preserve these treasures digitally, start from the collections of Mr. Jiang Wu-Chiang, a famo us scholar of Taiwan traditional puppet plays. The collection consists of live recordings, films and old pictures of traditional puppet plays, which were organized, authorized and haven’t been digitized. Also we will invite scholars and experts to write metadata for every piece of precious data based on the metadata formats of national culture databases. The project will also invite experts of traditional drama to help to concatenate blocks of recording, in order to have complete and correct presentations of puppet plays. We will build a traditional puppet play website in the project, which can play records of puppet shows and provide query services on line. The website will show the beauty of traditional puppet plays. We will also provide the scripts of some pieces of records of puppet shows. The scripts hopefully can be used to facilitate native language education. The website will have English and Japanese versions, which will help to marketing the beauty of Taiwan’s traditional culture to the world. We will ask native English and Japanese speaking people to do the translations. Usually, puppet troupes keep their performance recordings secret. However, the project has received written agreements from several traditional puppet troupes. They agree to provide recordings of their performance for us to use in the project.
