Sea surface temperature variation in the western Pacific sector/Philippine Sea has now been found to have significant impacts on the regional climate and have attracted intensive attentions during the last decade. The anomalous sea surface temperatures in these regions tend to be negative during El Niño events. It has been hypothesized in several studies that the interannual fluctuation of sea surface temperature in these regions can be largely attributed to the atmospheric forcing on the heat flux through the ocean surface or the mixing processes. We found that these processes alone cannot explain the quantitative change of sea surface temperature. The oceanic dynamical processes play an important role but are lacking of comprehensive understanding. In this work, the dynamical effect of the ocean during the El Niño will be investigated in depth. Such a study should give insight into the ocean’s participation in climate variability, a useful application for future regional climate prediction in the western North Pacific sector. Also, the study will advance the understanding of the local air-sea interaction process The work we propose is divided into two parts. The first part investigates the dynamics effect of the ocean. The strong El Niño event in 1997-1998 is chosen for the study. In the second stage of the work, mechanisms of long-term modulation as well as generation of the PSAC influencing the climate in the marine East Asia are investigated. Oceanic variations under different El Niño strength, such as the canonical El Niño v.s. El Niño Modoki, are investigated. Because of the scarcity of subsurface observations over ocean, for such a diagnostic study, the researcher intends to deploy model data (OFES and SINTEX-F), cross-examining with reanalysis data (JEDAC) and the buoy observations (TOGA/TAO).
