The project aims to explore how, in the information age, economic and financial information is presented on Taiwanese media. By adopting in-depth interviews and ethnographic observation methods, the project tries to study how media-workers of economic and financial sectors select, interpret and represent economic and financial issues in their day-to-day production practices. Economic and financial reports in contemporary society are commonly grounded with two viewpoints. On the one hand, this specialist report genre has been seen as vital aspects for improving citizens’ public knowledge and creating the ‘informed citizenry’; one the other hand, some has argued that the core of economic and financial reports serve and provide investors with immediate market information and accurate enterprise data for references of investment. However, how these two different viewpoints guide news-workers news production practices are still ambiguous and not well-studied so far. Therefore, this project will focus on these two viewpoints. As to the theoretical formwork, this research follows the practice theory which emphasizes how practitioners actually do and say within their social practices. Regarding to this, the researcher will focus on three dimensions that are relevant to the making of economic and financial news, including (a) the principles, values and professional ideologies and codes; (b) everyday working routines, time-space conditions and media characteristics; and (c) the forces which intervene the operating logics in the field of economic and financial journalism. This project will take a thorough examination into the process and practices of making economic and financial journalism. This empirical project is expected to be the foundation of the researcher’s following researches and further construction of theoretical frameworks. In the meantime, the research hopes to contribute a better understanding of how media-workers in Taiwan recognize the core nature and the ethic principles of economic and financial news through the empirical investigation. |
