Developments in personal computers and standards of Chinese character set made it possible to streamline Chinese processing operations and to change the way of retrieving Chinese place-names. To retrieve Chinese place-name between simplified and traditional Chinese is a very complicated subject in building archive system for digital map collection, and one of the important keys of a user-friendly system. The purpose of this study is to examine the issues related to retrieve Chinese place-name in the broader context of a more pluralistic and diverse standardization of Chinese characters.
