Zong Pu (1928-) is both a contemporary female writer and scholar. In 1957, with the practice of "Double Hundred" policy, she published the novel "Red Beans", which was her first well-known piece in the literary circle. This novel describes the conflict between the choices of revolution and love of a female college student, Jiang Mei, right before the rule of Communist Party of China (CPC). The writing style is different from that of the mainstream works, which mainly demonstrate the policies at that time; instead, her novel surmounts the inclination to literary formulation and conceptualization in the past seventeen years under the rule of CPC, and presents the emotional world and inward struggle of characters through her delicate writing skills. Her works inspired many readers; however, it also led her to the tribulation of politics. Only after Cultural Revolution was her "Red Beans" collected into "Reblooming Flowers". This paper focuses on the three main characters of "Red Beans", Jiang Mei, Qi Hong, and Xiao Su, and explains the characterization of Zong Pu's "Red Beans" by analyzing the image and personality of these characters. In addition, it uses the projections of "Torches", a narrative poem of Ai Qing, on "Red Beans" to explain the expression of the context of "parades" in these two works, and interpret that how "Torches" played the role of the extension of imagination as a latent text to "Red Beans".
