    Abstract: ”Motif”一詞，用作研究民間故事之術語時，指故事中最小之完整敘事單元，胡適將之音譯為「母題」。本文討論中國文字之表意特性及母題之易被誤解為「主題」，而改以「情節單元」作為對應。

    As a literary term, a "motif" is the smallest element in a tale having a power to persist in tradition. This paper discusses its Chinese translation by Dr. Hu Shih, the probable misunderstanding of the translation, and the coordinate term instead.
