The storage amount of Michelia compressa var. formosana was greatly reduced in the past 30 decades; mainly due to harvest of lower-and/or middle-elevation hardwood stands. Difficult seed storage, low seed germination percentage, slow growth, and fewer plantations made the gene pools of M. compressa var. formosana poorer. Thus, related genetic and breeding experiments are expected in the near future to conserve the native M. compressa var. formosana species. The purposes of establishing M. compressa var. formosana seed orchard at Charng-Ching Nursery, Lo-Tung in 1980 were gene conservation and seedling production. After twenty year of tree growth and stand development, very significant differences in survival ratio and DBH growth were found between selected 30 trees. However, no differences were found in height growth, main stem condition, and mean stem number. The results showed that environmental factors control the survival, growth, and development of M. compressa var. formosana. Yet, the effect of selected tree was low or none. As compared to the forked-stem trees, the straight-stem trees were wider in DBH and taller in height. Therefore, the phenology of M. compressa var. formosana should be conducted in the near future.
