Reject有二種語法搭配:(1) reject + N (2) reject + N1 + as + N2。
A Study of Taiwanese University Students’ Production of Collocations of English Synonyms Abstract The purpose of the one-year study is to investigate the competence of Taiwanese university students in producing English collocations of verb synonyms and adjective synonyms as well as the causes of their difficulty in producing them. A gap-filling collocation test of sixty questions will be given to one hundred and twenty university students from different majors to elicit collocations of verb synonyms refuse and reject as well as collocations of adjective synonyms of quick and fast. The test contains two parts: the first focuses on the collocations of refuse and reject; the second part deals with the collocations of quick and fast. The syntactic structures of refuse, reject, quick, and fast are based on the patterns of the combinations (i.e., collocations) provided by Longman Web Dictionary and JustTheWord, a collocation search engine. The syntactic structures for refuse are: (1) refuse (v) + N (2) refuse to + V (3) refuse + somebody + something. The syntactic structures for reject are: (1) reject + N (2) reject + N1 + as + N2. The syntactic structure for quick and fast is: quick/fast + N. After the collocation test, an individual retrospective interview will be conducted to thirty randomly chosen participants, ten from each proficiency level, to collect information about the participants’ knowledge of synonyms, their concept regarding collocations of synonyms, their strategy use in choosing the “right” synonym in producing a collocation. Theoretically, it will contribute to our understanding of (a) Taiwanese university students’ competence in producing acceptable English collocations of the verb synonyms refuse and reject and those of the adjective synonyms quick and fast; (b) the major L2 linguistic, cross-linguistic, and psycholinguistic factors that lead to the production of the acceptable and unacceptable forms of learner collocations of refuse and reject, quick and fast. (c) the various forms, meanings, and uses of the English collocations of verb synonyms refuse and reject and of adjective synonyms quick and fast. Practically, the findings of the study will (1) make teachers realize the need to shift some of our emphasis from the traditional view of language, which is based on the open-choice principle, to the collocationist model of language, which is based on the idiom principle; (2) help EFL teachers become more aware of the need to teach collocations of synonyms in order to improve learners’ competence in using idiomatic English; (3) help EFL teachers know how to deal with learners’ problems in learning collocations of synonyms and help EFL learners know how to use collocation search engines to find the right collocations of near synonyms; (4) trigger more research on the idiomatic use of English and eventually motivate the lexicographers to compile a better dictionary of synonyms that provides us with useful information of the collocational behaviors of synonyms; (5) will make the textbook writers understand the strong need for more learning materials on various types of collocations of synonyms.
